Célebre figurinista americana. Nació en California en 1897. Inteligente y rápida, ejerció su influencia en los cuarenta y los cincuenta desde los estudios de la Paramount. Se mudó a la Universal en 1967. Y nadie le impidió diseñar para todas las productoras y todas las estrellas hasta su muerte. Se trata de una figurinista convertida en leyenda. Trabajadora infatigable, vestía una media de cuarenta cintas anuales. Diseñó para televisión, publicó patrones en Vogue y fue la autora del vestuario de las líneas aéreas Pan American. Tiene 36 nominaciones al Oscar y, en total, ha recibido ocho estatuillas, siendo la modista más galardonada de todos los tiempos. Entre las estrellas a las que ha vestido se encuentran Kim Novak, Mae West, Bette Davis, Liz Taylor, Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Janet Leigh y Olivia de Havilland.
