Nació el 10 de septiembre de 1939 en Hamburgo, en el seno de un familia acomodada. Cuando tan sólo tenía catorce años, se trasladó a París y dos años después, ganó, junto con Yves Saint Laurent, el primer premio del concurso del Secretariado Internacional de la Lana. A partir de ese momento se dedicó a la moda como free lance, de forma independiente. Desarrolló tendencias diferentes a las propuestas por Courrèges, Cardin y cía. Apostó por el relevo de la alta costura a manos del prêt-à-porter. Permaneció tres años con Pierre Balmain y otro más en Jean Patou. Algún tiempo después comenzó a colaborar con la firma italiana Krizia y otras marcas de prêt-a-portèr.
